Body camera footage captured a harrowing struggle and shooting between Ohio housing authority police and a suspect who grabbed an officer's gun and fired it.
The incident happened at around 5:45 p.m. June 2 after Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority police responded to calls from a high-rise apartment building in Cleveland about a man throwing items from a balcony, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. The man—identified as Demonde Eskridge, 42, had thrown a TV a mattress and other things from the balcony, and he was sitting naked in his bathtub when officers reached the apartment.
Eskridge got out of the tub and punched an officer, setting off a scuffle. During the fight, Eskridge bit off the tip of an officer's finger and grabbed his gun.
Police deployed a TASER, but it failed to stop the suspect. Eskridge then took a gun from an officer and fired a shot that didn't strike anyone.
As the brawl continued, Eskridge was shot in the shoulder but continued to try to wrestle away the officers' weapons. Finally, police fatally shot Eskridge in the back.
The Ohio Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting.
